"Chingford Dawn" has an environmental theme but the recording location has significance too, it's very close to where I live and there are some interesting physical, political and ideological divides here which affect people's relationship with the environment. The recording was made on the site where I have an allotment. It's very close to the A406 North Circular road, right on the postcode and electoral boundary of Walthamstow and Chingford. As well as sounds of nature, there's lots of human made sound captured in the recording. The road has a significant impact on the environment and sound you hear here but wildlife seems to thrive around it and also has a major presence in the local soundscape. So this piece is really supposed to reflect the way that nature, natural sound, human activity and human made sound interact, affect and distort each other. Recorded at dawn using solar panels and synth. The ambient sound was recorded simultaneously and fed back through the synth to create an affected version of the natural sound. The entire recording is over 40mins long; this was taken from a section near the end when the sun was almost up. It was recorded on the 31st December, it was freezing making it as I had to just sit silently until dawn was over!
